Cartoonist Stidy’s stocking filler

Don’t Joke! The Year in Cartoons

Edited by Andy Mason and John Curtis

THIS should be the perfect stocking filler for anyone who is interested in politics and has a sense of humour (and if you are interested in politics and don’t have a sense of humour, I’d be surprised if you’ve made it through to the end of the year. If you don’t laugh, you’d have to cry, or worse).

The editors, cartoonists themselves, have collected almost 400 cartoons from around South Africa in 2009. On a daily basis, the cartoonists sharpen their pens into rapiers to have a go at presidents Zuma and Mbeki (remember him?), bigmouth Malema, drunken judges, climate change, Barack Obama and much more. Often a cartoon will only be seen by the readers of one newspaper, and so this collection offers a wider perspective. And the editors say it is the first of what will be an annual production.

It’s good to see The Witness’s Stidy featured prominently, along with Andy (Dave Anderson, who started his career at The Witness in the seventies and who now lives in Canada but still produces a weekly cartoon for the Sunday Times); Zapiro; Nanda Sooben; and others who may be less familiar here in KwaZulu-Natal. The book is a delectable way of looking back over the year.
