Cartoons: Local talent to open Comic-Con in U.S.

2013-06-12 00:00

THE publisher and one of the illustrators of a local sci-fi cartoon are the first South Africans invited to a panel discussion at Comic-Con, an annual pop culture festival in the U.S.

Moray Rhoda, a designer and illustrator from Cape Town, publishes The Velocity Anthology annually. It is a collection of short cartoons that has been issued since 2010 to coincide with rAge, SA’s premier local computer game and technology expo. The fourth edition will be issued in October.

Ray Whitcher, a lecturer in multimedia design at Greenside Design Centre in Johannesburg, is one of the illustrators of The Velocity Anthology,

Whitcher and Rhoda, as well as Neville Howard, their Australian publisher, were last week invited to conduct a panel discussion on Comic-Con’s opening night on July 18 in San Diego.

“There is no greater honour than to be asked to hold a panel discussion at Comic-Con. I could hardly breathe and ran around my house when I got the invite,” Whitcher said.

He said he plans to show that cartoons have academic value and hopes to get international support for the local cartoon industry — maybe even get a movie made based on a South African cartoon.
