Cascades ready for MTB masters

2013-08-20 00:00

CASCADES MTB Park is ready to host the 500 riders that are going to be competing in the Mountain Bike Masters World Championships that will start tomorrow.

Event director Alec Lenferna told The Witness that riders from 30 countries will compete in the event for riders over the age of 30.

Not wanting to single out any of the riders, Lenferna said everyone taking part in the races took their riding seriously, and was there to compete.

“All the South Africans that are here are high-quality riders. A lot of the riders come from a marathon background,” Lenferna said.

“These championships are more about character than individuals,” he said.

One rider he did mention was Sharlene McGilvray from Howick. Recognised locally by her well-known psychedelic hair, she won her category at the BMX World Champs in the city in 2010.

Lenferna said preparations were going well, and the course was also ready to host the riders. He added that registration would begin today, and riders had already begun to arrive.

Seventy-four-year-old Frances Marsburg from Gauteng, and Kloof’s Michael Smith would be two of the oldest competitors at the championships.

“I have been preparing really hard. I have been in the gym and doing a lot of riding,” Marsburg said.

“I have been riding mountain bikes seriously for about six years now, but also do a lot of road riding after my doctor told me I needed to ride more because I had knee surgery from running.”

Smith, a former road rider, said he was really looking forward to the world champs, adding that it was a last-minute decision to enter.
