Cash & Carry: stench still upsets residents

2011-06-14 00:00

PIETERMARITZ Street residents are still complaining of a bad smell after Siyaya Cash & Carry supermarket burned down and stock was left in the store to rot.

It has been two months since the 3 000 square metre store, which covers a block from Pietermaritz to Hoosen Haffejee streets, caught alight.

A resident who has lived in the area since the 1940s and who does not want to be named, described the stench as “unbearable”.

“We can’t even open the windows.

“I jog to Chase Valley each day and sometimes I wish I could stay there a bit longer because of the terrible smell that I have to face when I run back home,” he said.

He told The Witness he fears that he and his family will get sick.

The supermarket owner, Shabeer Noorgat, told The Witness the investigation into the fire is over and that the store is being cleaned.

“People need to comprehend that there was a fire and food was burnt, but we’re doing something about it.

“It’s like opening a can of worms. But we’re in the process of clearing the store and we’ve already started.

“This is not a house that burnt down it’s a big store and it takes a while to clear it.”

Noorgat said a large quantity of stock from the shop has been moved to dump sites and he hopes that the cleaning will be completed by the end of the week.
