Catch Funda Nenja and other dogs at the Garden Show

2013-09-26 00:00

AMONG the many attractions at this year’s Garden and Leisure Show at the Royal Showgrounds this weekend is the dog agility display. This will take place in the main arena on Saturday, September 28 and Sunday, September 29.

Contact dog agility will take place from 10 am to 12 noon, with dog jumping knock-out pairs from 10 am to 12 noon and dog jumping from 2 pm to 3 pm.

This year’s event will also feature participation by Funda Nenja, a township dog training initiative that has inspired multicultural and interspecies sharing since July 2009. The project comprises 70 dogs, their caregivers and a small group of volunteers. They meet weekly in Mpophomeni, a poor peri-urban township near Howick in the midlands.

Funda Nenja’s founder, professional dog trainer and former teacher Adrienne Olivier said: “The Funda Nenja programme is designed to assist vulnerable and marginalised communities experiencing social exclusion. Funda Nenja uses dog training as a vehicle to reduce isolation, increase self-confidence, communication skills and co-operation in children and develops respect and compassion for all living things.”

Funda Nenja is a registered non-profit organisation and it relies entirely on volunteers and donations to fund its work. If you would like to help, phone Adrienne at 033 347 2915 or 083 636 0891, or e-mail

The Garden and Leisure Show is open from 9 am to 5 pm from September 27 to 29. Tickets are R50 per adult and R35 for children under 12 and pensioners.
