Caterers targeted in bank scams

2011-09-07 00:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality has issued a warning about a scam by fraudsters who target the owners of catering companies and use the names of councillors as a reference to defraud them.

Msunduzi municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said the fraudsters call councillors asking them to provide the names of catering companies, saying they want to give them business.

“They call the caterers offering them a job to be done and then ask for banking details because they will pay them in advance.

“It has turned out that they then attempt to withdraw money from these accounts.”

He said councillors have been alerted about this, and even when they do not give out companies’ contact numbers, caterers are still told that councillors referred the callers to them.

A caterer who asked not to be named said, “They tried to scam me by asking me to give them a quotation, which I did … they also asked for my banking details, which I gave them because they sounded genuine.”

He said they deposited money into his account, but later called to say they had mistakenly deposited too much and asked that he refund them.

“Fortunately I had been to the bank and they had told me that this is a scam,” he added.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan warned people not to give their banking details to suspicious characters who call and claim to be interested in doing business with them.
