Cats of all varieties put on purrr-fect performance at Top Cat show in Pinetown

THE highlight of the feline calendar was held this weekend in Pinetown as kitty cats of all varieties put on a purr-fect purr-formance at the Top Cat show.

Scooping the title of Top Cat was a chincilla Persian cat with a rather odd and ponderous name — “The Catwalk Brettachal Maserati”.

This pedigree kitty was imported from Germany and is owned by cat lover Stuart Marsh. The show was by invitation only and those cats invited were previous winners, and finalists from the three previous competitions.

Jane Goble, a cat fundi and breeder, explained that each type of cat has to be meticulously groomed for the event and it is usually the gorgeous fluffy Persians that require the most grooming.

Breeders and groomers go through a washing and shampooing process with many steps involved, rigorous rinsing and drying with specialised equipment.

These cats are class acts. They are judged on the soft silky feel of their fur. Judges are looking for the breed’s finer points such as their coat, and length or shape of their ears.

The most unusual breeds on show were the Russian and the Peterbald cat breeds. Goble said there were only two or three breeders of these cats in the country. While the cats were not judged on their personality, it helps the owner if their furry friend co-operates with the judges. These exotic cats can cost upwards of R3 000 if bought from a registered breeder, who ensures that the cats are not over-bred.

It may be a dog’s life for downtrodden dogs, but for pampered pussycats — it’s all quite bearable really.
