Cattle farmers reach for the hairspray to get their ‘girls’ ready for the show

2014-04-25 00:00

STOMPIE Olivier (27), heartbreaker on the DStv programme Boer soek ’n Vrou, has put the city girls on hold to focus on the bovine attractions on his farm.

He was yesterday hard at work preparing his heifers to compete in the national Holstein championshp at ihe Bloemfontein Show p.

But unlike his normal farming labours, which require gumboots, spades and spanners, this part of a cow farmer’s day entails hair dryers, tweezers, brushes and even hairspray, all used to ensure his Nicoles, as he has dubbed the heifers, shine from their noses to the tippy-tips of their tails.

“It [the cattle show] is actually nothing different to a beauty pageant. This is like a woman wearing a push-up bra to look nice,” explained Stompie.

He said for their big moment, each of his Nicoles had to look perfect. Not a hair may be out of place.

He said some local farmers have in the past hired professional cowfitters from Italy, Canada and Spain to prepare their animals for the cattle championships. Stompie said he was fortunate to have learnt the cowfitter’s craft in 2008, when he spent for six months in Canada, working alongside and learning from the world’s best cowfitters to prepare show cattle for competitions.

He said one gets to love the calves like pets and he really enjoys dollying them up.

“Like some guys get a kick from fishing, this is what we [cowfitters] do as a hobby.”

Hotspot-Nicole, who is mother of the group of Nicoles, won the Free State heifer championship last year.
