Caution: missing railings on College Road bridge

2011-05-12 00:00

SCRAP metal thieves are believed to be behind the theft of part of the railing along College Road bridge.

Concerns have been raised that the gaping hole may pose a danger to pedestrians who use it, especially the Maritzburg College boys who walk across the bridge to and from school.

The aluminium safety railing bars are said to have vanished a week and a half ago.

The missing bars have since been replaced with barricade tape, until they are replaced with new ones.

It is not known when this will happen.

A concerned Pietermaritzburg resident who uses the bridge said this has become a hazard to school pupils.

“When we informed the municipality about it they said they don’t have money to fix it.

“I use that bridge on my way to work as well and I don’t feel safe,” the woman told The Witness.

According to Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma, the theft of aluminium rails “is really becoming a problem for us”.

An aluminium bar can cost between R1 500 and R2 200 per metre.

“We are considering alternative replacements to aluminium to avoid theft,” Zuma added.

Msunduzi is in the process of replacing rails at an estimated cost of R6 000.

Maritzburg College headmaster Ron Jury issued a warning to the pupils at his school to exercise extra caution when they walk on the bridge.

The municipality was unable to say exactly when the rails will be fully installed.
