Cele: ‘routine check-up’ runs into day five

2011-08-19 00:00

NATIONAL Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele still insists he is in hospital for routine medical tests — five days after he was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital in Pretoria.

Cele (59) told the media on Monday he would be discharged by Tuesday. No one but family has been allowed to visit him.

Approached for comment, Colonel Vishnu Naidoo, national spokesperson for the police, told Beeld on Wednesday to “leave the man alone”.

While Cele is in hospital Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya is the acting head of the police.

Cele was booked into the Little Company of Mary Hospital with chest pains on Sunday, but the hospital does not have cardiac specialists, and he was taken by ambulance to the Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital.
