Celeb series to be broadcast ‘to show South Africa who Reeva was’

2013-02-16 00:00

REEVA Steenkamp’s parents have given permission for the Tropika Island of Treasure reality series to be broadcast as planned.

Samantha Moon, a spokesperson for the series, said the aim wasn’t to lure more viewers, but to pay tribute to Steenkamp.

A tribute will be broadcast before the show tonight at 6 pm.

“She was a wonderful person,” said Moon. “We want to show the rest of South Africa who … Reeva was.”

Jane Celliers, operational director of Ice Models, said she was glad the series would go ahead.

“She was very excited. [The show] would have made her into a celebrity rather than just a model,” said Celliers.

Presenter DJ Fresh said Steenkamp was one of the nicest celebrities they had had on the show in five series, and really got involved with the non-famous contestants.

“Reeva was mad about baking. Her banana bread [which she often brought for colleagues] was the best in the world.”

Steenkamp moved to Johannesburg to pursue a modelling career seven years after obtaining a law degree.

Celliers said: “She phoned me and said she wasn’t tall enough for the catwalk, but I should give her a chance. She was only 1,7 m tall, but was such a hard worker.”

Steenkamp often popped in at the office, and Ice Models became her family, she said.

Celliers said Steenkamp was passionate about women’s rights and about animals. She was fond of charity work.

Steenkamp didn’t bask in Oscar Pistorius’s fame, Celliers said. “She was very humble and stayed true to herself. The same Reeva who arrived here seven years ago popped in here last week.”
