Cemetery soon getting new cremator

2008-01-30 00:00

Mountain Rise cemetery will soon have another state-of-the-art cremator after funds were identified to replace a 20-year-old cremator and refurbish a 31-year-old cremator.

In June last year, a promise made by Pietermaritzburg Parks and Recreation department to revamp the crematorium came to fruition when a new fully automatic cremator valued at over R1 million was purchased. The new cremator, which was completely vandalised in 2006, was repaired and is now fully operational. The cremation building was also revamped, with new tiles, lights and painted interior and exterior.

Cremator experts advised the municipality that it needed to replace or refurbish the two older cremators, which were recently reported to be constantly breaking down to the ire of funeral undertakers and families, often resulting in families opting to have cremations carried out in Durban.

Electricity power cuts, load shedding included, will not affect the functioning of the crematorium as the department installed a standby generator for the crematorium at a cost of R 300 000 on Monday.
