Centenary: Voortrekker museum launches exciting programme

2011-12-07 00:00

THE path to the Msunduzi/Voortrekker Museum’s centenary celebration is paved with exciting changes that were unveiled at a press briefing yesterday.

The museum introduced its new centenary logo, newly appointed council members and director Mlungisi Ngubane, as well as events leading up to next year.

Said the museum’s deputy director, Gilbert Torlage, “We have decided to launch these plans now to gather momentum a year before our centenary celebrations.”

The theme of the celebration is reconciliation.

Events planned for next year include a memorial church service at the Church of the Vow on April 22, story-telling competitions in September and a photography exhibition by city residents showcasing life in Pietermaritzburg, and the unveiling of the plaque.

Museum council member Pieter Nel said the history of the museum will be documented in a book to be launched next year.

“There is this perception that the museum was born under conflict, but we are creating a symbolic space of reconciliation. It is exciting to see how the museum has grown and transformed over the years and to celebrate it,” said Nel.
