Centres: Mjekevu and Newman join Sharks for trials

2011-12-06 00:00

CENTRES Wandile Mjekevu and Morgan Newman have joined the Sharks for trials this week as preparations for the 2012 Super Rugby tournament get under way.

The Sharks will give Mjekevu and Newman a chance to impress as they aim to bolster their midfield reserves after the departure of Stefan Terblanche and Adi Jacobs.

The Sharks have already signed Stormers centre Tim Whitehead.

After falling out of favour with the Lions, 20-year-old former Baby Bok Mjekevu will have the opportunity to earn a contract with the Sharks.

The King Edward School old boy featured for the Lions in Super Rugby in 2010, playing 10 out of their 13 matches at wing.

His highlight was a hat-trick in the 72-65 loss to the Chiefs that season.

Newman (25), who captained Emerging Boks in the 2008 Nations Cup, has recovered from a broken leg that he suffered with the Stormers against the Bulls in 2010.

He spent 2011 with Free State in the Vodacom Cup.
