Chad’s dad settles assault case

2012-09-08 00:00

BERT le Clos, father of Olympic swimming star Chad, has paid R18 000 to settle a civil claim following an alleged assault.

Durban chemist Richard Simpson laid a criminal charge following an incident at the Stella sports club in Durban in April 2010. According to court documents, Simpson suffered a black eye, bruises and cuts on his nose.

Le Clos was not convicted and Simpson opened a civil claim.

A witness told Simpson’s lawyer there was an exchange of words and Le Clos spat on Simpson and assaulted him. Le Clos claimed Simpson started the fight and said he has a grudge against his family. Simpson is involved in another legal dispute with a member of Le Clos’s family.

A default judgment was made against Le Clos in December when he arrived at court in Pinetown after the case had been called. He then claimed he could not pay because he had no job and no property.

The case was due in court again on Thursday, but his, lawyer Craig Preston-Whyte, told the Mercury he settled beforehand.
