‘Champions are found at Maritzburg College’

2009-05-07 00:00

MARITZBURG College is one of the beneficiaries of the Epoch-Optima Public Schools’ Maths Challenge and last night it celebrated the opening of its Centre of Maths Excellence.

The marketing manager at Maritzburg College, Graham Bennetts, said Epoch-Optima are independent trusts founded by Anglo American Corporation to disburse funds for furthering excellence in maths education.

College’s funding is a result of an outreach programme that mentors 20 teachers from local disadvantaged schools. College shares its resources and expertise with these teachers to help elevate the standard of mathematics in their schools.

Ann McLoughlin, the deputy principal in charge of academics at College, said they are delighted to have been selected and have already put the funding to good use for the centre, which is up and running.

“Within our school we have been able to provide several of our maths teachers with technological empowerment, and beyond the confines of the school, we have set up a vibrant mathematics outreach programme … ” she said.

The function last night attracted high-profile guests from the Education Department and from the trusts.

In a speech, Edwin Madisha, who represents the education branch of the two trusts, said their association with College fits perfectly with their philosophy of backing champions.

“I sometimes think that the terms ‘empower’ and ‘uplift’ falsely and patronisingly put the credit for positive change on the founder or giver, whereas no amount of giving will get us anywhere unless the receiver is the change champion.

“We know that such people and champions are to be found here at Maritzburg College … that is why we are so delighted to be associated with your efforts,” Madisha said.
