Chan: Wits and Chiefs agree to play ball

2014-01-06 00:00

AFTER a frantic Friday night of discussion, Bafana Bafana won their battle against Kaizer Chiefs and Wits and both PSL clubs have agreed to release their combined nine players for this month’s African Nations Championship (Chan), which begins in Cape Town on Saturday.

Bafana had left Johannesburg with just 14 players on Friday after both clubs’ players had failed to arrive for a team medical, but after reaching a resolution on Friday, all players were expected to arrive in Cape Town yesterday.

Amakhosi had sent out a Tweet last week saying that they would only make their five players available for the national team after their PSL clash against Mamelodi Sundowns on January 23, but Safa president Danny Jordaan revealed that Chiefs boss Kaizer Motaung had agreed to play ball late on Friday night.

“We are extremely grateful to Kaizer Chiefs for their continued patriotism in support of the national team,” Jordaan said in a statement.

“We have no doubt that with the inclusion of Kaizer Chiefs players in the national squad, the team will be significantly strengthened for the Chan tournament.”

The inclusion of the Chiefs players does significantly enhance Bafana’s chances of succeeding at Chan, with coach Gordon Igesund now able to turn to the experience of captain Itumeleng Khune, Bernard Parker, Tefu Mashamaite, Tsepo Masilela and Siphiwe Tshabalala.

For Wits, the compromise came when Safa agreed to ask the PSL to consider rescheduling its fixtures on February 4.

Wits play Orlando Pirates that day, and it appears that they want to give their four Bafana players a rest period after Chan ends on February 1.

“Wits’ support for the national team has never been in doubt and we salute them for the support they have provided to the team for this Chan tournament,” said Jordaan.

The South African team open the tournament on Saturday when they take on Mozambique at Cape Town Stadium.
