Charity: KZN doctor in line for global award and R1,2 mln

2011-10-14 00:00

A RETIRED doctor from KwaZulu-Natal, Keith Wimble, has been short-listed for the international Grahame Maher award, and he stands to win R1,2 million for a charity he supports.

Wimble has been giving medical assistance to Ikamva Labantu, an NGO in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

Wimble said in a statement motivating his charity that people living in shack settlements, like the one where he works, fall ill because of a lack of services such water and lights and dirt removal, and neglect, but nothing is done to address these poor conditions as many people are not aware of their rights.

He said that if he wins the competition he will use the money to help raise living standards in the area to acceptable levels.

His success in the competition relies heavily on public voting via Facebook. Voting is open until Friday, October 21.
