Charmaine Naidoo murder case postponed

2014-04-25 00:00

THE abduction, armed robbery and murder case against two men implicated in the murder of Charmaine Naidoo of Merebank was postponed to May 16 by Durban magistrate Vanitha Armu yesterday.

Mandlenkosi Jobe and Bongani Manyathi are alleged to have murdered Naidoo, the wife of Labour Department employee Ivin Maistry (49), who has since been arrested in connection with the murder. Maistry is alleged to have arranged the abduction and murder of his wife. He allegedly hired Sifiso Joyisa, who claimed he had hired Jobe and Manyathi to commit the crime. The three men were arrested and Joyisa pleaded guilty to the murder last Wednesday and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. He had claimed to have shot Naidoo in the arm while his co-accused allegedly stabbed and strangled Naidoo using her shoelaces. The two have not pleaded and were yesterday remanded in custody.

In his guilty plea statement before his sentencing last week, Joyisa referred to Maistry as the ‘boss’ and this led to Maistry’s arrest the following day.

He appeared in court on Tuesday and his case was postponed to May 16 for a formal bail application. A source close to the case said Maistry could appear alongside Jobe and Manyathi.

Naidoo’s father, Rashid Narasiah, said his daughter had an insurance policy with Old Mutual but the paperwork could be in a locked room. He said her family had not been to her room since she was murdered, as Maistry had always held the key.
