Chase Valley home robbed

2013-04-16 00:00

A GANG of men travelling in a flashy vehicle broke into a Chase Valley home at the weekend, taking a television, cellphone and jewellery worth thousands of rands.

The homeowner, who asked not to be named, said he was away in Durban with his wife when the incident took place.

“I left the house at 3.30 pm and I think the robbery happened at 6 pm. Luckily I had left my kids with the in-laws,” the man said yesterday, adding that they rarely left their house.

“We’re at home 90% of the time.”

While in Durban, he was alerted that his house alarms had gone off.

“When they told me that two alarms in the house had gone off, I immediately knew that there was someone in the house,” he said. They immediately left Durban and returned home.

His neighbour, who was alerted by the alarm, saw four men in the house, and screamed.

The neighbour, who also asked not to be named, said she heard the alarm, and after hearing things falling in the house, she knew it was burglars. “We started to shout and scream and saw the men getting out of the house and into a awaiting Golf 6 GTI and driving off,” she said.

Before the men drove off, the woman saw that one of them was carrying a firearm.

The man said that although they now have a security guard stationed outside the house, they have moved out and have found another place to live in.

“My wife is too scared to go back there,” he said, adding that he had heard of other robberies that occurred in Chase Valley earlier this year.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said they were investigating a housebreaking and theft case.

“An LG television, an Apple iPhone and various jewellery valued at about R17 000 were stolen,” he said.

No arrests were made.

Last month, The Witness reported that a gang netted R40 000 in cash, three cars and R150 000 worth of jewellery in two separate robberies in Chase Valley.

In one of the robberies, a domestic worker was accosted by two men while she was alone in her employer’s house.

Earlier this month, police made eight arrests in connection with robberies that have taken place in the city’s suburbs.
