Child (4) killed: Driver turns himself in

2012-03-26 00:00

A MAN who ran away from an accident scene after he allegedly drove over a four-year-old child has handed himself in to police.

The child was killed and her mother hospitalised after being knocked down by a vehicle at an accident scene in Edwin Swales Drive in Durban on Saturday night.

The driver of the black Jeep that struck the victims fled the scene of the accident on foot, but handed himself over to police yesterday.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the incident occurred after an accident took place involving a truck and a car. While avoiding that accident the Jeep driver allegedly lost control and ran into the woman and her child, who were walking next to the road.

“The driver got out and ran away, but he has now handed himself over,” he said.

He said the 34-year-old man has been charged with culpable homicide.

Zwane said the identity of the woman and child would be released after the next of kin had been informed.
