Child and eight adults die in ‘one of the worst’ crashes

2014-12-01 00:00

A SMALL child and eight adults were killed in a horror crash in Northern KwaZulu-Natal last night.

KZN Emergency Rescue Service spokesperson Caleb Wang said it was one of the worst scenes his paramedics had ever attended.

According to Wang, a truck and a bakkie collided while travelling along the R22 near the Sibiyi River last night.

The bakkie was carrying 12 people, nine of whom, including a young child, died instantly.

Wang said the three other occupants in the bakkie survived with two sustaining serious injuries and one with minor injuries, and were rushed immediately to Mseleni Hospital for further treatment.

The truck driver emerged unharmed from the horror crash and was escorted from the scene by police as the Mseleni community “posed a threat to the driver”, said Wang.

“The nine who died had quite disfiguring injuries. The paramedics who attended the accident said it was a horrible scene,” said Wang.

According to Wang, due to the extent of the disfiguring injuries, the crash was extremely traumatic to all involved.
