Child crushed to death by truck

A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy was killed after his mother’s scooter was hit by a truck in Durban, Netcare 911 said yesterday.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the accident happened on Bayhead Road near South Coast road yesterday afternoon.

“It is believed that the child was on the back of the mother’s scooter when they were hit by the truck.

“The child was crushed by the truck and died on the scene.”

The mother was not injured but had to be sedated.

The road was closed while officials were on the scene.

Botha said parents needed to be careful when allowing children to ride on scooters, or motorbikes.

“Children do not have bike sense. It is far safer for them not to be on motorbikes, as the injuries they sustain in accidents are horrific,” he said.

Earlier in the weekend, three people were killed in various road accidents.

On Saturday, on the N2 north-bound near Winkelspruit, one person died and two were injured when a vehicle parked in the emergency lane was rear-ended by a heavy motor vehicle.

In another incident, on the R74 between Muden and Weenen, the driver of a bakkie died on impact after a head-on collision with another vehicle.

Near the Ultra City at uMgababa, a female passenger died and two were injured after the bakkie they were travelling in was involved in a collision with another vehicle, before rolling several times and ejecting the female passenger on Friday night.
