Child rape: teenage accused in hospital

2012-05-03 00:00

THE teenager accused of the rape and mutilation of his eight year-old neighbour in Gingindlovu last week is due in court today for the alleged assault of another young girl that took place before the rape of the eight year-old.

He is in a KZN hospital where he has been undergoing psychiatric testing.

Education MEC Senzo Mchunu was quoted earlier this week as saying that the boy had been moved to a place of safety in Durban for his own protection and that of the community.

However, a hospital spokesperson confirmed yesterday that the accused had been at the hospital since Monday.

Speaking to The Witness last night, Mchunu said that he had not been following the whereabouts of the boy and was not aware that he was in hospital.

“I am not interested where the boy is.

“It is not desirable that he is at school or in the community. This act was too gruesome to take for granted,” said Mchunu.

“He needs to be in a place where professionals can investigate [what led to this behaviour].

“Profiling must be done,” said Mchunu.”

The 15-year-old appeared in court on Monday this week over the assault of the eight-year-old girl, and will again appear in court in Mtunzini today in connection with the same case.

The girl has been discharged from hospital into the care of her grandmother.

Her attacker gouged out her left eye, which has since been surgically removed, and damaged her right eye.
