Child raped, hanged: murderers get life

2010-01-29 00:00

THE two men who brutally murdered a Newcastle woman, Ranjini Narainsamy, and her daughter, Hegendhri (10), in September 2008 were jailed for life by high court Judge Themba Sishi in the Madadeni circuit court yesterday.

Both men had worked for Narainsamy’s husband, Selvan, who was out of the country at the time.

Siphamandla Nkosi (22) was handed two life terms for murder and rape and five years’ imprisonment for theft.

His co-accused, Mxolisi Masondo, was also jailed for life for his role in the murders — despite the fact that he was a juvenile at the time, just two days short of his 18th birthday — and five years’ imprisonment for theft.

Masondo was not convicted of rape.

The judge said Masondo’s level of maturity, the nature of the crimes and the expectations by society were factors he took into account when imposing a life sentence on him.

In their statements to the court, in which they pleaded guilty to the crimes, the two men described how they lay in wait for the mother and daughter to arrive home.

Nkosi said that when they opened the garage of the house they accosted Narainsamy and strangled her with a scarf.

“We thereafter entered the house where we got hold of the minor child, Hegendhri.

“We tied her hands behind her back and I took her to the main bedroom where I had sexual intercourse with her against her will … I knew at all times that the child was below the age of 12 years.”

“I thereafter took the minor child to the passage of the house where I tied a rope around her neck and placed her in a standing position on the chair.

“I tied the other end of the rope around a wooden terrace structure in the passage and then removed the chair from under her feet causing her to hang to death.

“I confirm the deceased child died as a result of asphyxiation”.

He stated the reason for killing the victims was so that they could not identify them.

The men stole a Toyota Tazz car, a safe containing a 7,65 mm pistol, two gold necklaces, a twenty-dollar bill, two cellphones as well as other jewellery, goods and appliances.

Masondo said that when Nkosi grabbed Narainsamy around the neck in the garage and forced her to the ground, he had shouted at Masondo to fetch rope, which he did.

“My co-accused then tied the hands and legs of the deceased and then proceeded to wrap a woollen scarf around her neck tightly.”

As a result she died of asphyxiation, he said.
