Children died helping woman hit by car

2013-06-25 00:00

THE four children who were killed by a driver on Sunday afternoon on the R102, Ottawa Bridge, near Phoenix, were returning from fetching some sugar cane, according to Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu.

In a statement yesterday, Mchunu said the children had noticed that a woman was hit by a car on the same R102 and they tried to help.

“It appears that they were trying to assist the woman when an oncoming driver lost control of the vehicle and ran over them. All four of them died on the scene,” he said.

Netcare911 reported on Sunday yesterday that four other children were were taken to various hospitals.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the Phoenix police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

“I am deeply saddened by the latest, fatal accidents in the province. The death of minors on R102 is devastating — and the investigation is under way to uncover the cause. My deepest condolences to the families of all the victims.

“In light of these accidents, most of which are avoidable, I call on all of us to remain vigilant and take a strong position against transgressors on the road,” said Mchunu.

He noted the decrease of road accidents this past weekend compared to last week, when 53 people died from 42 accidents.

Twenty-one people were killed over the past weekend in road accidents in various parts of the province, according to Mchunu.
