Children’s Home donations withheld

LOCAL donors are withholding their support to the Natal Children’s Home following reports that the management board of the facility is being investigated by the Social Welfare Department over allegations of misappropriation of funds and ill treatment of the children.

Donor Jeremy Shearer said it is inappropriate to donate money while the management is under investigation.

“With this negative publicity I have no reason to support the home, especially when the fund-raiser has been suspended,” said Shearer.

Ward 26 councillor and donor Glen McArthur said he has also withheld his support.

He said he and delegates from the provincial legislature will visit the home on Thursday and Friday to talk to the management about the suspension of fundraiser Debbie Schroeder pending an investigation of insubordination.

When the allegations were first reported, the department said it will train the management on how to run the facility.

But yesterday the department made an about-turn, with spokesperson Mandla Ngema saying they are looking at cutting all ties with the facility.

Ngema said inaccurate reports by the social worker working for the home prevented the department from detecting the management’s failings.

“We never received any information suggesting that there were problems of this nature at the home until recently.

“The social worker has been working for the home at the expense of the children.”

He said a report has been compiled and necessary steps will be taken against her.
