Children’s play centre a great success

CAPITALISING on the growing young-family market in Pietermaritzburg, a city resident has established a new children’s entertainment venue at Camps Drift Park.

Kate Clarence, a mother of two, recently opened Play Days in a 1 000 square-metre facility.

A former biology teacher who holds a BSc degree in microbiology, Clarence first hit upon the idea of establishing a “soft play centre” while visiting family in Britain a few years ago.

The venue boasts a fully-fledged coffee shop, an indoor bike track, a toy shop and book shop, a four-storey jungle gym, an outdoor play area, and a special venue for hosting birthday parties and other functions.

Clarence told The Witness the business focused on the importance of play time as a developmental tool in a child’s life.

“We believe this is a unique offering. I have learnt that Pietermaritzburg has a community of young families. It’s been a dream of mine to open up this business for about five years.”

The centre is well situated in a relatively busy node.

Clarence has invested a great deal of money and time in procuring soft-play equipment and accessories, as well as establishing the giant jungle gym and setting up the specialised venue for birthdays.

“Our goals are to be a business with a good reputation. We are dynamic and will keep improving and changing things.

“Our long-term plan is to franchise the business.”
