Chilling exorcism-driven thrills

2012-03-02 00:00

OPENING at CineCentre in Pietermaritzburg today is the “found footage”-style horror thriller, The Devil Inside , directed by William Brent Bell.

The film tells the story of a young woman, Isabella Rossi (Fernanda Andrade), who, after learning that her mother committed a series of terrible crimes while undergoing an exorcism, travels to Rome with a film crew on a mission to uncover the truth.

In order to gain a better understanding of the spiritual plight that her mother endured, Isabella and her crew attend a series of unsanctioned exorcisms that become increasingly terrifying.

Other films still showing in Pietermaritzburg include: War Horse, Material , This Means War , Chronicle , Safe House , Jack and Jill and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 3D .

New to Durban cinemas is the Oscar-winning black-and-white silent film, The Artist .

The film, which walked off with the Academy Awards for best film and best director for Michel Hazanavicius, stars best actor Oscar winner, Jean Dujardin, as George Valentin, a screen idol in Hollywood before the dawn of talking movies.

Despite his popularity as a romance icon, his marriage is far from perfect, and one day, by chance, he meets ambitious chorus girl Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), and is immediately smitten. However, while romance is definitely in the air, so is change, and as Peppy’s star begins to rise in the newly invented talking-picture world, George’s begins to dip as he is unable to make the change between the two mediums.

Oscar nominee, Jonah Hill (Moneyball), stars in The Sitter, a comedy about a college student, who, while suspended for the semester and living back at home with his single mom, has a night to remember when he gets talked into baby-sitting the miniature hell raisers who live next door.

Also new to the circuit is Rampart, directed by The Messenger’s Oren Moverman and co-written by crime novelist James Ellroy (LA Confidential , The Black Dahlia ).

This genre-bending, nineties Los Angeles police family drama explores the dark soul and romantic misadventures of a never-changing LAPD cop, played by Woody Harrelson, whose past is finally catching up with him in the wake of a department-wide corruption scandal.

For fans of the Metropolitan Opera series, Cinema Nouveau Gateway is hosting Richard Wagner’s Gtterdmmerung from tomorrow.

The opera is the last in Richard Wagner’s cycle of four operas titled Der Ring des Nibelungen ( The Ring of the Nibelung , or The Ring for short), which premiered at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on August 17, 1876. The title is a translation into German of the Old Norse phrase Ragnark, which in Norse mythology refers to a prophesied war of the gods that brings about the end of the world.

Gtterdmmerung is conducted by Fabio Luisi and stars Deborah Voigt as Brnnhilde and Jay Hunter Morris as Siegfried.
