CHARGES of attempted murder for Grant Whitehead and reckless and negligent driving for his brother Ross, both of Hilton, were dropped by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

They were arrested early this month after Grant allegedly shot at Sandile Thabethe’s car with a paintball gun at a set of traffic lights at the corner of Pine Street and Mayor’s Walk.

Thabethe, a police K9 unit member, was returning from picking up his wife from the Pietermaritzburg FET college in Pine Street at about 7 pm.

After he heard shots he chased the brothers’ car until he caught them in Victoria Road.

The state withdrew the charges yesterday after mediation between the complainant and the accused. Court officials were not permitted to provide further information.

Thabethe said he was not sure what to do about the matter.

“The state said there was no evidence or proof of any wrongdoing by the boys. In the presence of their lawyer they apologised and offered to wash the paint from my vehicle. I declined the offer.

“I just don’t know what to say because you don’t go to court if the state says there’s no evidence.”

The boys’ father commented: “I told you there was no case, but you went ahead and wrote false information on the front page of your paper. I have nothing to say to you as the matter is in the hands of my lawyers.”
