Christmas: babies a bit slow to arrive

2007-12-26 00:00

No babies appear to have made a midnight debut on Christmas Day in Pietermaritzburg.

A hospital matron remarked that this was unusual, since there have always been babies born shortly after midnight on Christmas Day. "I hope they churn out a few on New Year’s Day," she quipped.

A check around local hospitals ascertained that Edendale Hospital had its first birth at 2.15 am. Northdale Hospital and Medi-Clinic followed close behind with births around 2.20 am. Grey’s Hospital maternity ward had their first baby just before 6 am on Christmas Day, while St Anne’s had a mother’s bundle of joy hours before Christmas Day. Midlands Medical Centre could not be reached.
