EDENDALE Hospital, which had nine babies delivered on Christmas Day, welcomed Pietermaritzburg’s first just after midnight.

More than 20 babies were delivered in city hospitals on the day.

Minenhle Khanyile was the first to be delivered to her mother Nonhle Khanyile, who is from Sweetwaters. The three kilogram baby girl was delivered at about 12.25 am.

She and her mother were discharged from the hospital at 1.30 pm yesterday, while the hospital discharged most other mothers and their babies immediately after delivery to go home to celebrate Christmas with their families.

A delighted Sibahle Zondi gave birth to her 3,02 kg baby boy, Lwandile, at 9.15 pm on Christmas Day at St Anne’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

Lwandile slept through being photographed, oblivious to the excitement of proud nursing sisters Shanila Moodley and Rashika Marion who were on duty when he was born. Moodley said he was the first Christmas baby born at the hospital in a number of years.

The first of nine babies to make their appearance at Northdale hospital on the big day was a little boy born to Elizabeth Mngaweni just after midnight. Other mothers giving birth at Northdale were Nelisiwe Mchunu (boy), Dineo Mcasaluli (girl), Zanele Ndwandwe (boy), Sithobile Mtshali (girl), Nonkululeko Zondi (boy), Bonisiwe Mkhize (girl), Zinhle Ndlovu (girl) and Balungile Zuma (girl).

Meanwhile twin boys were born to Ms T Ngcobo at Midlands Medical Centre at 7.50 and 7.57 pm on Christmas Day, causing great joy to the staff.

A boy and a girl, weighing in at 2,8 and 2 kg were the only babies to be delivered at the Pietermaritzburg Medi-clinic on Christmas day at 8.38 am and 6 pm.
