Christmas on a budget

2010-12-21 00:00

CHRISTMAS is upon us and you may be wondering where, you’ll find enough money to buy gifts for your friends and family.

If you’re not keen on pawning your family heirlooms or robbing a bank, and if a Lottery win is not imminent you’ll be glad to know there is an alternative.

Purple Dragon in Liberty Midlands Mall is a veritable treasure trove of useful gifts and trinkets that won’t break the bank.

With a large variety of imported stock, owner Linda Addicott and her friendly staff have been hard at work for seven years.

“You’ll always find something useful and fun in the store,” Addicott said.

“And we keep our prices as affordable as possible so people keep coming back for more. I have some loyal customers who have been visiting the store since I opened all those years ago,” she added.

Purple Dragon is open for business during the festive season from 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday, and from 8 am to 7 pm on Sundays.

In addition to gifts from Purple Dragon, budget shoppers will be pleased to know the mall is a great place to find gifts that won’t break the bank.

Instead of searching the busy mall for the perfect gift, why not visit the following stores’ websites? That way you can see what’s in stock and how much it is going to cost before you make a trip to the mall.

• The Crazy Store is a good place to find affordable gifts. There, you can find a set of educational blocks, a handy multipurpose tool kit and a wooden bath set for under R60 each. Visit

• At Pep, you’ll be able to buy pairs of summer sandals for men and women in all sizes for under R40. There’s also an extensive home section stocked with brightly coloured cups and plates — all for less than R20.

Instead of queuing to use an ATM, you can also make use of the store’s cash-back facility where you can draw money at the tills. Visit www.pep

• Clicks’s online catalogue and website is a breeze to navigate, making Christmas shopping an easier experience.

The handy “add to shopping list” tab allows you to create a list online (with a handy running total). The list, which is complete with prices for each item and a total cost, can be printed, ensuring no nasty surprises at the cash register in store.

I took Addicott at Purple Dragon up on her promise of finding quality products at lower prices in her store. With a budget of no more than R55 per person, I set out to find a gift for a man, woman, boy and girl.

• Black-and-white striped cosmetic bag: R36

• Teal eye shadow: R8

• Red lip stain: 10

This beautiful silver hip flask costs just R53. If sobriety is more your thing, another option is a sterling-silver ring from Purple Dragon’s large collection at R30 each.

• Fairy hair scrunchie: R5

• Beaded necklace, bracelet, earring set: R10

• Fluffy crown: R7

• Little purse: R5

• Banana-flavoured lip gloss: R4

• Lumo shoelaces: R29

• Punk rock arm band: 16

I couldn’t resist this quirky, strange-looking gift. It may look like an alien tool for organ harvesting, but it is actually a head massager. And an effective one at that — for only R17.
