Church Street: Two left dead after mob attacks knifing suspect

2013-03-26 00:00

A ROBBERY and subsequent vigilante action saw two men being stabbed to death in the Pietermaritzburg central business district on Friday evening.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said the body of Mzalwa Aleka (30), a Congolese national, was found lying on the sidewalk on Church Street. He had sustained stab wounds.

A while later, another body, that of Mqobi Shezi (28), was also found on the sidewalk along West Street.

He had stab wounds to his stomach and multiple injuries to his body.

Jeevan said it was alleged that Aleka was waiting for his girlfriend at an intersection when he was confronted by a group of men who tried to rob him, and he resisted.

“It is further alleged that one of the men produced a knife and stabbed Aleka in the chest, fatally wounding him,” she said.

The suspects then fled the scene.

After Aleka was stabbed, it is believed a relative heard of the attack, and went to look for his killers together with a “crowd of people”.

“The crowd then caught up with Shezi, who they believed to be part of the group, and assaulted him, fatally wounding him.

“During the altercation, the [relative] sustained a stab wound to his arm. He was taken to a hospital in the city by an ambulance.”

The man was arrested and is expected to make an appearance in the high court in Pietermaritzburg shortly.
