Church aids Jika Joe flood victims

2008-02-19 00:00

PEOPLE residing in the Ash Road Jika Joe informal settlement whose mud houses were swept away by heavy rain received relief in the form of blankets and carpets from the Lord Comforters Church yesterday.

The flood victims, currently living in tents provided by the municipality’s disaster management unit, each received blankets and carpets from pastors from the church.

Patricia Ngcobo, a community committee member, said that they are grateful for the assistance. “At times like these we need all the help we can get,” said Ngcobo.

“We were told that we will stay in these tents for the next three months, and then receive temporary houses.”

Jika Joe residents have expressed repeated reluctance to relocate from the area, but municipal officials have described the situation as unacceptable, saying that the area is a high risk for flooding.
