Church keeps faith after 23 members killed in crash

DE DOORNS — “It is not the end. It is just the beginning.”

The faith of a member of the Twelve Apostles’ Church in Christ in the Western Cape, which lost 23 members in a bus accident yesterday, was strong as he spoke about their grief.

“As Christians we know that the day will come that a person will die — we don’t know when,” said Dumisani Ximisi.

“These sorts of things happen all over the world, we have to remember that God is a god of life.”

The church members were returning home from a women’s meeting in Secunda, Mpumalanga, when the bus’s brakes apparently failed.

It left the road on the Hex River Pass and rolled, ending up in a ditch.

When the brakes failed, the driver apparently tried to stop the bus by driving into an arrestor bed, but in vain.

Twenty women, two young children and two men — one of them the bus driver — were killed.

The bus hit a rock cliff, damaging its roof, left side and front.

There were 65 people on board.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 10.30 am and by 12.30 pm they were still struggling to free people trapped under the bus.

Two helicopters and 13 ambulances were used to take severely injured people to hospitals across the region.

At the hospitals, relatives of the dead and injured arrived to visit them.

None was prepared to speak to the media.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
