EDUCATION across the board was the focus of all speakers at the launch of the Citizen’s Charter, held yesterday at the Woodburn Stadium. The event coincided with the United Nations-endorsed Adult Learners’ Week, which is observed every September.

MEC for Finance,Ina Cronjé reiterated the need for education, stating that public servants should focus on educating themselves on their finances.

The Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize, congratulated government employees who received awards for training under the Adult Education and Training (AET) literacy programme. Mkhize said democracy means being able to choose, but being unable to read inhibits one’s choices.

Several adult learners told the audience how their lives had changed after becoming literate.

Mkhize unveiled a plaque commemorating the Citizen’s Charter, which spells out what services will be provided and how they will be provided. The emphasis is on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the way in which services have been delivered.
