‘City must foot the bill’

IF the Msunduzi Municipality wants the four provincial intervention team members, whose contracts were not renewed, to come back, it will have to pay for them from its own coffers.

Msunduzi administrator Johann Mettler announced this at a recent sitting of the executive committee following a discussion initiated by DA caucus leader Bill Lambert.

Lamenting the disbanding of the intervention team, Lambert said: “The four who left have left a tremendous void. They were on the cusp of major breakthroughs.”

Mettler said the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has said that it wants the municipality to employ local expertise to replace those whose contracts have lapsed.

If it wants the departed four to return, the municipality will have to foot the salaries bill because those resources will no longer be available through Cogta, said Mettler.

In the meantime, he added, he and Ben Dorfling will shoulder the workload, but if additional manpower becomes necessary they will advertise for posts.

Lambert said it will be impossible for Mettler and Dorfling to take on the workload of six people, and he has received numerous phone calls from city residents since The Witness reported that the four left.

“The mood out there in the city is that this is cause for alarm. People say this is just the start of a huge cover-up,” said Lambert.
