2011-04-27 00:00

TWO passengers on a City to City bus were killed while 14 others were injured when the bus collided with a truck and overturned shortly after leaving Harrismith in the Free State in the early evening yesterday.

The bus is believed to have been carrying 19 passengers who boarded in Pretoria.

A City to City official at Durban station said 16 of the passengers were travelling to Durban and three to Pietermaritzburg.

The accident occurred about three kilometres past Harrismith at about 5 pm.

“For now it is impossible for us to establish where the deceased or anyone was going,” said the official.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said one victim died at the scene while another was declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Harrismith.

Eastern Free State police spokesperson Sergeant Majang Mosupa said the injured were taken to Thebe Hospital.

“Police established that the bus was following two trucks when one of the trucks overtook another one. As the truck returned to the slow lane it collided with the bus.”

Mosupa said police are having difficulty in identifying of the deceased as documents and luggage had been tumbled about.

“We are still battling to establish who was travelling to Durban and who was going to Pietermaritzburg. At this stage we cannot even find a list of passengers,” she added.

Mosupa said police have opened a case of culpable homicide. “But as the investigation proceeds more other charges will be added.”
