Civic cleaners find body in river

2014-07-19 00:00

THE spirit of the Mandela Day clean-up in Howick was dashed by a horror find yesterday.

Two Duzi-Umngeni Conservation Trust (Duct) members were shocked when they found a man’s body floating in the Umngeni River under the bridge in Howick.

Alfred Zuma, a supervisor at Duct, and his colleague Jabulani Nene were volunteering to clean the river as part of their 67 minutes for Mandela, when they spotted the body.

“We were just about to clean along the trash boom in the river and we were already in our boat when we saw a body floating in the water,” said Zuma.

He said they saw the head first.

“We called our head office to inform them that we had spotted the body in the river and they phoned the police,” he said.

Zuma said they stopped their cleaning campaign and waited for police to remove the body.

They suspect that the man, in his early fifties, might have drowned further up the river and was washed down towards Howick Falls.

“His body must have been stopped by the trash boom which prevents foreign objects from going downwards into the falls. The boom helps keep the river clean for tourists who frequent the Howick Falls,” said Zuma.

Members of the Pietermaritzburg K9 Search and Rescue unit removed the body, while community members swamped the area watching the rescue.

Police spokesperson Captain Lolly Moodley, said an inquest docket was opened.
