Clarify role of amakhosi in ritual, says king

THE provincial government must clarify the role of traditional leaders when the time comes for implementing the newly revived male circumcision ritual, says Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini,

The king, who announced the revival of this centuries-old ritual among the Zulus last year, made the call yesterday while officially opening a sitting of the KwaZulu-Natal House of Traditional Leaders at the Royal Showgrounds.

Zwelithini said Premier Zweli Mkhize, Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube and Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo need to address the role to be played by traditional leaders when circumcisions are performed across the province.

“I request you to look into this matter to enable amakhosi to prepare themselves,” said Zwelithini.

The Health Department is preparing for the launch of the programme. Mkhize has assured the king that when the “tools” to carry out the rituals are ready, he will be informed.

Zwelithini said: “During the olden days ... we had a rare breed of men who became the champions of good values, and were moulded to become men who protected their families.”
