Class Act: Durban actor wins SA’s toughest audition

A KWAZULU-NATAL 27-year-old, who was a contestant on “South Africa’s toughest film audition”, was last Saturday chosen for a leading role in an upcoming movie.

Sdumo Mtshali of Montclaire, Durban, came out first among 4 000 hopefuls nationwide who auditioned during the premiere season of SABC 1’s Class Act reality show.

As part of his prize, Mtshali will play the leading man in the film Ghetto Dangerous, being produced by Curious Pictures and directed by Donovan Marsh.

He will also appear in a television advert and attend an eight-week acting course at the New York Film Academy in the United States.

A theatre performer by profession, Mtshali holds a B.Tech. acting degree from the Durban University of Technology and has performed in various venues around Pietermaritzburg, including the Hexagon and Winston Churchill theatres, he told The Witness.

Mtshali said winning the Class Act challenge means critics will be keeping an eye on him. “They will want to know if I’ll be able to sustain myself in the industry,” he said.

He said he was overwhelmed by the attention he’s been getting since 13 episodes ago. “Everyone approaches you as if they’ve met you before and some people think they own you because they voted for you throughout the show. But I’m always calm and humble,” Mtshali said.
