‘Class Act’: Pietermaritzburg-born actress makes it to final three in reality show

2011-06-27 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG-BORN actress Rosa Whitcher has made it into the final three of the acting reality show Class Act, and believes she has a real chance to win the show and a coveted eight-week trip to study at a film school in the United States.

The 23-year-old, who was raised in Woodlands and attended Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High, said the competition had been challenging, forcing the competitors to draw on strengths they didn’t even know they had.

The toughest challenge, however, has been the one facing the contestants this week — to kick butt in the female action genre.

“I never really thought I could do this kind of role, but I saw my wardrobe and it got me very excited. I think I can pull it off, but I need to feel confident,” said Whitcher.

Whitcher, who has a degree from the University of Cape Town, said that after graduating she had to decide whether or to stay in Cape Town or to go to Johannesburg, where she’d heard there was plenty of work.

“Instead of working I found myself sitting at home with nothing to do and I wondered if I’d made the right decision,” she said.

“Then Class Act came along and I thought that instead of complaining I should make the most of the opportunity, even if it meant standing in a queue with thousands of other people.

“I felt it would give me exposure and that I might be able to meet people working in the industry.

“No matter when this thing ends — and I do hope to make it to the final — I will take a lot of confidence from it,” she said.

Whitcher, who is going head-to-head with Tumie Ngumla, from Cape Town, and Mandisa Nduna, from Durban, has been amazed at the amount of support she has received from friends and family.

“All I can say is thank you,” she added.

Class Act airs every Saturday evening at 6.30 pm on SABC 1, and the elimination shows are screened every Monday at 7 pm.

You can vote for your favourite by sending the number of the contestant to 33388 (SMS charged at R1.50), or by logging on to www.classactsa.mobi or voting on Mxit.

Voting opens during the Saturday show and closes at midnight on Sunday.
