Class offers kids a chance to ‘leap’ ahead

A DURBAN North school is offering a new class to ease the path for pupils into senior primary school.

From the beginning of 2015, Glenashley Preparatory School is offering a smaller Grade 4 class for a maximum of 14 pupils that will be especially tailored for children requiring a more intimate environment while they adjust to the routines of senior primary school.

“These are children who need a bit more guidance and nurturing,” said Glenashley Preparatory School principal Penny Alston.

The new Leap Class is especially aimed at pupils who have attended remedial schools and are now returning to more formal education. “These will be children who have experienced learning problems or discrepancies in their maths and literacy proficiency,” said Alston.

“They just need a smaller environment, but they have the potential to succeed. We will probably extend the class into Grade 5 then filter them into the mainstream.”

Grade 4 is a key grade as it marks the beginning of a new learning phase said Glenashley Prep’s art teacher Maja Engelbrecht. “Here they begin to study history, geography, and science. This is the foundation phase and it’s a huge step.”

Pupils attending the Leap Class, headed by a specialist teacher and assistant, will be fully integrated into the life of the school. “They will be at the heart of everything, including sport,” said Engelbrecht. “They will not be treated differently.”
