Clifton proves its mettle

2014-11-04 00:00

CLIFTON College travelled to Hilton for a full day of waterpolo fixtures across all age groups, while Glenwood entertained Westville and earlier in the week, Clifton and DHS played to a draw.

Clifton v Hilton

Clifton started strongly in the first chukka, showing why they are the number one-ranked school in the sport.

They romped into a 5-0 lead before Hilton settled and took the game to them. Nullfying Clifton’s momentum, Hilton clawed their way back into contention, enjoying a solid second chukka to reach half-time 6-4.

A vocal home crowd appreciated the effort and a tight third chukka saw only one score for Clifton as the sides headed into the final quarter at 7-4.

Clifton’s defensive structures and pattern was key in keeping Hilton at bay; Gareth May in goal calling on all his experience.

A few strong words from Clifton’s coach ahead of the final chukka brought the desired result as five unanswered goals were scored for a solid 12-4 win.

Glenwood v Westville Boys’ High

This close affair always had the result in the balance. Yet, the scenario was created by a display from both sides littered with errors.

Glenwood was up against tough competition and had to come from behind to claim the narrowest of wins.

With three of their KZN U16 players out the pool on exclusion fouls for the final quarter they dug deep to win 6-5 by the odd goal.

For Glenwood, Michael Scott scored two goals.

Other result: DHS 8 Clifton 8
