Climate cyclist to visit PMB

2009-12-01 00:00

CLIMATE activist Robert Zipplies, will be in town on Thursday on his journey from Cape Town to Durban on an eZee electric bicycle.

Zipplies is the editor of Bending the Curve, a guide to tackling climate change. He is campaigning in collaboration with Project 90 by 2030 to educate people about climate change and encouraging South Africans to use more environmentally friendly transport to reduce carbon emissions.

His route has taken him through Johannesburg and Pretoria, and he is making public presentations in 12 cities.

The objective of the 3 000 km journey is to raise awareness about the dangers of carbon emissions and to challenge South Africans to reduce emissions, create a low-carbon society, and adapt to the unavoidable climatic changes.

The bicycle has a small electric motor in the front wheel, which, said Zipplies, “is our way of making people aware of the dangers of climate change. It’s time that we deal with carbon emissions and this bike offers a convenient means of urban transport, with far fewer gas emissions.”

The bike features a lithium polymer battery with a range of up to 50km, at speeds of up to 35km per hour. The battery can be charged overnight.

Zipplies will arrive in town on Thursday morning and will be at the Showgrounds at 4 pm.
