Cloete, Elgar make sure Knights claim second place

2014-04-07 00:00

THE Knights survived a fiery onslaught by the Dolphins in their attempt to replace the hosts as second-placed Sunfoil Series team in their four-day clash at Chevrolet Park in Bloemfontein, thanks to an undefeated 104-run partnership between Gihahn Cloete and Dean Elgar for the third wicket.

The Knights finished on 116 for two and secured the second place on the Sunfoil Series log, which guaranteed them R600 000 in prize money. The Dolphins finished third and received R200 000 for their valiant efforts.

The Dolphins smashed 564 for seven declared in their first innings, thanks to centuries by Divan van Wyk (128) and Khaya Zondo (119). Taubraz Shamsi (3-113) and Matthew Pillans (3-77) put the skids under the hosts after an opening partnership of 191 between Reeza Hendricks (103) and Cloete (83).

They reduced the hosts to 329 for nine.

But Corné Dry (69, 83 balls, 10x4, 1x6) and Malusi Siboto (56, 106 balls, 3x4, 1x6) added 117 runs off 160 balls to deny the visitors an opportunity to enforce the follow-on.

They propelled the Knights to 446.

Divan van Wyk hit 73 off 70 balls in the second innings and Cody Chetty produced a belligerent 63 off 70 to set up a declaration for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins declared on 200 for four and set the Knights a target of 319.

Daryn Dupavillon took 2-19 in his first six overs and removed Hendricks for seven and Rilee Rossouw for four to reduce the Knights to 12 for two.

Cloete hit another half-century, a 69 off 104 balls with 13 fours, and Elgar contributed a defiant 33 off 73 balls, to guide the hosts to safety. They shared in a partnership of 104 runs off 27.1 overs.

Dupavillon, with 2-34 in eight overs, was the best bowler on view.

The Knights finished second on the log on 104.44 points, while the Dolphins ended third with 96.7 points.

The Cape Cobras were the runaway winners with 137,88 points and will bank a cool R1 million for their silverware-grabbing efforts.
