Close call: trees fall on taxi, without injuries

2010-10-15 00:00

THE strong winds that battered the South Coast yesterday were nothing short of fearsome.

No one will know that more than minibus taxi driver Jabulani Mchunu.

Mchunu was travelling along Abingdon Road in Umtentweni at around 4.30 pm when a tree next to the road fell, crashing on to the roof of the taxi in a freak accident.

He said his initial reaction was one of fear and that it took a few seconds to realise what exactly had happened.

He says that he was travelling at about 40 km/h.

A woman who lives in a house near the tree phoned the authorities, who were quick to respond.

The Hibiscus Coast Fire and Rescue Department, the Traffic Department and a team from Hibiscus Coast Med-Evac private ambulance and rescue services raced to the scene.

None of the six people who were in the minibus at the time of the accident was injured.

They were all able to leave the vehicle.

Mchunu, who says the vehicle is insured, was visibly shaken.

“I never thought anything like this would ever happen,” he said.

Firefighter Beyers le Roux climbed on to the top of the minibus and used a chainsaw to remove the tree from the top of the badly dented vehicle.

Just metres down the road, another tree was blown over by the wind and blocked the corner of Abingdon and Norwood roads.
