‘Close down this dump site’

2013-02-25 00:00

THE unkempt South Road garden refuse site is an eyesore to Northdale residents, and they want it closed.

Ash Haripersadh, whose house borders the dump site, said when Msunduzi Municipality initially proposed building the site, he sent a letter of concern, but was assured that this was a much-needed facility for the community and only garden refuse was to be dumped at the site.

“For many years we had no problems, but in the last five years, poor management has caused the dump site to deteriorate into an unacceptable ‘Free for All’ dumping site,” he said.

“The daily fires impact on our health due to the toxic fumes. We are subjected to rodents, snakes and flies in our kitchens,” said Haripersadh.

The unsavoury dump site is bordered by homes, a church, public library, the Truro Hall, a supermarket and a pre-school.

Haripersadh said a petition was currently being circulated and would be forwarded to municipal management when it was completed.

“We want this dump site closed,” he said.

Pastor Shaul Paul, resident minister at the nearby South Road Church, said they also want the dump site closed because they cannot bear the stench emanating from it.

Paul said they get visitors from all over the world, including Canada and the United States of America, and the dump site creates a bad impression of the city.

Ward 28 councillor, Nithia Govender, said he had informed municipal management of the situation, but he met with excuses.

“… Residents blame me when in fact management has not done their job,” he said.

Govender said they wanted to see the working schedule for waste management because they were convinced that nothing had been done in the last month to clear the site.

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson, Brian Zuma said: “The matter of these sites is being looked into very seriously.”

He said if they had to close the South Road garden refuse site they would do so “as we did with the one at Imbali next to the Greater Edendale Mall.”

Zuma said: “We are looking at different options to manage dump sites.”
