Close games, strong words and fast breaks bring points

2009-11-03 00:00

LAST week basketball saw some close games with Maritzburg College beating Kearsney by one point, Alexandra winning by two points against Hilton and Michaelhouse surprisingly being held to a three-point win against St Nicholas. Durban High School had another big win against Northwood.

Kearsney, a young and inexperienced side, surprised College on the hot court with a structured offence and defence, while College relied too heavily on individual players. This style of play allowed Kearsney to pull ahead and at the half way stage the visitors led 16-8.

Stern words worked and the College defence improved with a couple of fast breaks resulting in points, which enabled College to pull back. At the end of the third quarter Kearsney had a slender 27-25 lead.

The last quarter was intense and exciting. Kearsney was the first to score. Then College scored two baskets in quick succession to leave the teams level on 29 points each with about six minutes remaining.

Kearsney went three points ahead after scoring and being fouled in the process.

College pulled back with a throw from the corner to make it 31-32.

Kearsney scored another point from a foul and then in a vital turnover, College was fouled on the way to the basket and they were awarded two free throws. The College player remained calm as he slotted both, to give College the one point win.

After defeating Treverton easily during the week, the Alex match against Hilton on Saturday was a thriller. At the end of the first quarter it was Alex which led 10-7, but in the second quarter Hilton went ahead scoring 16 points to the 13 scored by Alex to leave the sides locked at 23 all at half time.

At the end of the third chukka Hilton scored one more point than Alex to again lead 33-32. Alex stamina has improved and they pushed ahead scoring 13 points to the 10 by Hilton to take the match45-43.

Michaelhouse, after a tough battle midweek where they narrowly defeated a game St Nicholas 40-37, played well on Saturday, winning comfortably 76-62 against St Charles. Patrick Howard was the top scorer with 22 points for the winners.

Maritzburg College 34 Kearsney 33, Michaelhouse 76 St Charles 62, Alexandra 45 Hilton 43, DHS 96 Northwood 34, Michaelhouse 40 St Nicholas 37, Alexandra 96 Treverton 37.
